SQAPE in practice

Wide range of applications

The products we make on the basis of our SQAPE technology can be widely used in our society. Firstly, because of their excellent, certified qualities, with numerous technical advantages. For example, the shrinkage is lower than with standard concrete, the flexural and tensile strength is better, as are the durability and acid resistance.

Furthermore, enormous progress is being made in the area of sustainability, especially in reducing CO2 emissions as much as possible. The proportion of natural, safe substances in concrete increases significantly with SQAPE technology, while the use of residual materials ('secondary raw materials') gives a significant boost to circularity. SQAPE is thus paving the way to 2050.

The SQAPE technology can be used in existing concrete plants and factories with only minor modifications. Practical application is also improved, speeding up the construction of roundabouts, for example. For licensees, these are favourable conditions for bringing the SQAPE technology in-house.

Cycle path Zeewolde

By using SQAPE technology to replace the usual cement in concrete with much more sustainable raw materials, Cementbouw realised the first geopolymer bicycle path in the Netherlands in Zeewolde (2016). Together with SQAPE, Cementbouw worked on the development of this road pavement based on the cementless RAMAC readymix concrete mortar, with a much lower CO2 footprint than in ordinary concrete. The bicycle path was constructed in a standard manner, but is much more resistant to frost, among other things.

SQAPE offered Zeewolde the opportunity to consciously choose this sustainable geopolymer concrete, with a halved EIP value, in order to contribute to the city's ambitions in the area of sustainability and CO2 reduction. As the most sustainable municipality in the Netherlands, the municipality of Zeewolde had this scoop, which was applied to the renovation of the bicycle path on the Gelderseweg.

Grass elements Overijssel

Since the inception of our innovative technology, it has been clear that the application of SQAPE results in products that meet all known requirements and standards. That is why a leading concrete manufacturer such as v.d. Bosch Beton immediately joined forces with us as a launching partner. The result is excellent products that are already in full use.

The first of these went to the province of Overijssel in 2018, where the geopolymer line from V.d. Bosch Beton delivered the concrete grass elements in the verge pavement of the N331. The relevant member of the Overijssel provincial executive commented on this first: "We work with companies to achieve sustainability gains. The innovation by V.d. Bosch Beton contributes to making the infrastructure more sustainable and to road safety."

Made-to-measure

Using SQAPE technology, various types of products can be made. The advantage here is the easy production, using traditional methods, the excellent processability and the multitude of properties that can be achieved. The SQAPE technology can meet many customer-specific, mechanical and physical requirements to make the final product suitable for the desired application. For example:

  • Ordinary mortar

  • Roadside and road surfacing

  • Grass elements

  • Pavements

  • Tiles

  • FUP elements (Fauna Exit Point)

  • Cast floors

  • Precast concrete

Anticipated

You can do anything with our sustainable SQAPE technology. The various applications have now proven themselves in practice and the demand for cement-free products is growing strongly. There are other producers who can supply geopolymer concrete. However, they do not achieve many of the results and technical advantages
of the SQAPE technology, which are reflected in excellent physical properties and excellent workability. Our selection of mineral residues and our special SQAPE additives are responsible for this, which is why the SQAPE technology is patented almost everywhere in the world. With the added benefit of an enormous CO2 reduction.

We will extend this lead in the coming years, as we at SQAPE work on new applications and improvements to our technology, particularly for armoured applications. We learn a lot from this and strive for an even wider use of cementless products, always ensuring scientific substantiation of our results and certification of our products.
